Developed as part of the capstone subject Graphic Design Studio 3, this was developed out of a love of sharing knowledge with other students and junior designers.
Concept: the main idea of this project was to create a resource guide for current and recent graphic design students. This concept was inspired by my own experiences and interactions with other students in the Bachelor of Design program. The field of graphic design is vast and can be overwhelming. I aim to offer support and direction to fellow students. I hope to serve as a mentor to new designers and provide guidance to others. I find great satisfaction in helping others, and it's important to be able to make a difference.
Research
At the beginning of developing the brief, I intended to create a booklet focused on providing tips and guidance for student designers. I began by thinking about the kinds of topics I could cover, and how to further break up those sections to cover the right details.
The magazine was inspired by another design publication: Desktop Magazine, which was published for several years until ceasing publication in 2015. The images on the right are all issues I have been fortunate enough to collect and helped inspire the typographic choices in Above and Beyond.
Explore
After more research, I expanded the concept from a booklet to more of a magazine-style format. This meant looking into how the magazines I have collected format their layouts and the balance between images and text.
